Question:
Assalamualaikum ustaz. Since tonight is the night of Rejab, I once heard regarding a hadith about the five nights that all supplications are granted and one of them is at the beginning of Rejab. Is the hadith sahih? Hope for an explanation.
Answer:
Waalaikumussalam wrt. wbt.,
Alhamdulillah, praise and gratitude to Allah SWT for His countless blessings for us all. Praise and salutations to our beloved Prophet Muhammad PBUH, his family, companions, and all those who follow his footsteps until the Final day.
In answering the above question, it is not a hadith from the Prophet PBUH and there are no hadith scholars that narrated it through sanad from the Prophet PBUH except the narration of al-Dailami in Musnad al-Firdaus (2/196) and Ibn Asakir in Tarikh Dimasyq (10/408). And in the sanad there is Ibrahim bin Abi Yahya, and others who are criticized. Hence, al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar evaluated it as dha’if in the book al-Talkhis al-Habir.
However, there are scholars that narrated it from the words of companions and the tabi’in. ‘Abd al-Razzaq removed it in al-Musannaf (4/317) through mauquf to Ibn ‘Umar. al-Baihaqi also removed it through mauquf from Abi al-Darda’ in al-Sunan al-Kubra (3/319). Their sanads are also dhaif.
Imam al-Syafi’I said: It has come to us, “Indeed, the supplications are granted on 5 nights…” and in my opinion, it is sunnah and good what I stated on these nights but it doesn’t mean it is fardhu. (See al-Umm, 1/264)
This opinion of Imam al-Syafi’I is a very cautious opinion, that it is conveyed in the form of sighah balaghana (بلغنا) and the word yuqal (يقال) with the meaning ‘it is said’ as stated in the book al-Umm. Although, for whoever wants to practise it and supplicate, then he can do so. The same for other nights and days. Hopefully, Allah SWT will accept and grant all our supplications. Amin.
Furthermore, we don’t deny that the month of Rejab is included as one of the holy months and has its own advantages, where the holy months consist of four months which are Zulkaedah, Zulhijjah, Muharram and Rejab.
May Allah SWT grant us all understanding in this religion. Amin.
Wallahu a’lam.
